Week 10: October 31st-November 3rd
We had so much fun at the fire station! Thank you for all of the volunteers / chaperones! The children were able to explore the fire trucks and an ambulance. We also went into the fire station training room to learn about fire safety. The fire fighters put on each piece of their fire gear and explained the importance of each. They also demonstrated how they would enter a burning building. They discussed the importance of not hiding, shouting out and not being afraid of the fire fighters. The children each received a fire safety packet and hat. We will be writing thank you cards on Monday. Our dramatic play area was turned into the "Pre-K Fire Station". The children helped paint and create a fire truck. They took turns playing the role of fire fighters. They also used play phones to practice calling 911. During circle time this week we focused on fire safety. We discussed "stop, drop and roll" if your clothes catch on fire. We discussed what we would do if there was a fire... get out and stay out and calling 911 for help. We also discussed the importance of having a meeting spot. We played a numeral recognition game. We had flames numbered 1-10. The children flipped a number card and identified the numeral. They had to find the corresponding numeral on a flame and toss a bean bag on it. During Table Time and Free Choice we finger painted with red and yellow paint. We also painted with forks! We created shape collage fire trucks and fire truck puppets. The children colored, cut and stapled fire trucks to a craft stick. We also played "Roll and Color". The children rolled a die, counted the dots and found the corresponding numeral on a flame to color. We worked on identifying numerals 1-6. Gabriella and Rachel from the Kellogg Hubbard library came and read books with us and left 20 books for our classroom library. Gabriella will begin coming in every two weeks to switch books and read with us. This week she came for the morning session.
