Week 8: October 17th-20th Thank you for bringing in apples and apple peelers! We made delicious apple sauce. The children enjoyed peeling the apples and eating the peels! During circle time this week we used our problem solving skills to guess what object was in the mystery bag. The children received three clues about an object hidden in the bag; they had to think about the clue and use their prior knowledge to figure out the object. The clues were: 1) It is something that you eat; 2) It has seeds and 3) It grows on trees. After each clue the children made "smart guesses". We had many great guesses... an orange, an avocado, a pear, etc. After the final clue many children arrived at the correct answer...an apple. This activity supports children's vocabulary, memory and categorizing skills. We will continue to have mystery bags throughout the school year. We played an apple matching game played like "memory" using pictures of apples differing slightly in size and color. This game supports turn-taking, early memory skills and visual discrimination skills. We learned about the life cycle of an apple tree. We acted out the cycle: seed, sapling, apple tree, growing blossoms, blossoms falling off and apples growing. We also used picture cards to sequence. Five children were given pictures of the different stages and had to get in the correct order from seed to apple tree. We read many non-fiction books about apples. We also read Ten Apples up on Top. After reading this we tried to balance an apple on our head! During Table Time we did many activities involving apples. We made mosaic paper plate apples. We used our fine motor skills to rip paper and practiced our scissor skills to cut paper into tiny pieces to glue to paper plates. We added stems and leaves. We made apple prints and painted with apples. We created apple towers... three apples was the highest we could get! During Free Choice we explored shaving cream, enjoyed finding treasures buried in the sand table and building towers with the cardboard blocks. Alex constructed "Vermont" with the blocks and even added " the green mountains." We participated in the all school celebration. We build scarecrows, played in the leaves and ate apple- blueberry sauce that Mr. B's morning group made! **Important Dates & Reminders*** **October 28th: Halloween Dance 6:30-8:00 ** November 4th-12th: Scholastic Book Fair **November 9th: Harvest Luncheon (Pre-K eats 11:15-12:00) **November 10th: BES Pre-K Closed-- Parent / Teacher Conferences **November 23rd-25th: No School-- Thanksgiving Break
