Week 7: October 11th-13th
This week we began talking about fall. The children shared what they know about fall and the changes that they have observed in the weather and the trees. We read My Leaf Book by Monica Wellington. The children described the leaves using color, size and shape. We used red, orange, yellow and green tempera paint to paint a variety leaves. We also read the book Do You Know Which Ones Will Grow? by Susan A. Shea. This is a rhyming book that explores living verse non-living. The book presents a comparison of two objects for the children to identify which one will grow. This led to great discussion about what makes something alive. Most children were able to identify the living thing and describe common attributes that characterize living things. It was interesting to hear the children's thinking and rationale about what makes something alive. There were some misconceptions, but we will continue to explore and revisit this concept when we investigate plants, animals, life cycles, etc. This week we completed many of the beginning of the year assessments. I look forward to meeting with families at conferences. A sign up sheet for parent/teacher conferences will be sent home later this week. Deborah and I got the opportunity to attend the VAECY conference Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We attended some great sessions that will enhance our prekindergarten curriculum. I look forward to incorporating and implementing ideas. I am most excited about story telling with children. Each child will get the opportunity to write and direct their own story. We will begin collecting and writing stories in Novemeber. **Important Dates & Reminders*** **Every Wednesday: 3:00pm early dismissal **Home/School Folders: Please make sure your child brings it to school each day. Week 6: October 3-6 On Thursday, Nicole from the Kellogg Hubbard library came to our classroom for story hour! She sang a song greeting and read four stories. She also let each child select a book to bring home with them! We had our first evacuation drill. We walked over to the Berlin Fire Department. The children, again, did an AMAZING job! The morning session has music each Wednesday. This week we went to the music room for the first time and got the opportunity to explore instruments. The children had opportunities to work one-on-one, in small and in large groups throughout the day to support development across all of the learning domains with the focus this week on early math skills...counting, one-to-one correspondence and number recognition. During circle time we learned the following chant: "Super Duper 1 2 3, won't you tap/clap your name for me". The children used the "Big Lines" and "Little Lines" from Mat Man to tap out the number of syllables in their names. We also used the lines with the song "Tap, Tap, Tap" from Handwriting without Tears to work on positional words and discriminating sounds within words. We also played many games at circle. * What's Missing?: 3-4 objects were placed in front. A child was asked to close his/her eyes and another child would take in object away for the child to identify what object is missing. *Rhyming: 4 picture cards were placed in the middle of the circle and each child was given a word to identify the picture that rhymed. *Walk the Plank: The numbers 1-6 are written on a paint stick. The children need to roll a dice (we used both dots and numbered dice), identify the number and cover the corresponding number. The game continues until all six numbers are covered. Some children were ready for the next version... the paint stick has numbers 2-12 and two dice are used. Our solution kit is beginning to be used independently! When children are having an issue they retrieve the kit and find a solution on their own! At times, assistance is still needed. During table time and free choice we explored water colors, play dough, peg boards and geo-boards. **Important Dates & Reminders*** **Every Wednesday: 3:00pm early dismissal **Home/School Folders: Please make sure your child brings it to school each day. The folders are checked daily. ** October 10th: No School in observance of Columbus Day ** Please do NOT park in the bus lanes when dropping off or picking up students.
